Obed Marsh was a captain of a ship in the early 1800s. His travels across the globe, and his encountering isolated tribes led him to learn of the Creatures of the Night, of Heaven and Hell, of rituals to let him dream of, and later communicate/bargain with, eldritch beings from beyond. The more Obed saw, the more he wanted two things beyond all others: worldly success for his family line, and loosening the boundaries between the ordinary world and the World of Night.

Aeon knew that he lacked the strength to craft against all of Hell, and that Hell would break through unless its denizens were carefully managed. Aeon knew each of the greater Entities of Wickedness had their own agendas, and would want the Gate of Wickedness closed from all minor powers--no sense in letting B Teams clutter the field during the Title Match. So the Architect Aeon crafted a deal between Lilith and Hra'gad: they would help lock the gates from the minor powers of Wickedness, so long as both of them were able to pass through the gates. Both readily agreed, as both thought they would always be able to pass through the Gates (never imagining defeat). However, neither would entrust Aeon or each other with the power or responsibility to keep the gate sealed, as they did not wish to see any single entity get stronger.

Aeon Hades suggested Obed Marsh, a mortal with no significant power of his own and relatively small ambition, to serve as the agent of Aeon, of Lilith, and of Hra'gad: Obed Marsh would make sure the gates had Guardians capable of keeping the doors shut--guardians other than Aeon Hades, Obed Marsh, Lilith, Hra'gad, and any of Obed's descendants. Obed would also let the rumor of "keys" circulate through Hell, as well as their conditions: minor powers would not test Hra'gad, Lilith, and Aeon's powers, but would be satisfied planning an escape if/when they fell. Obed readily agreed, as this position allowed him to freely travel outside of time, and to negotiate worldly success for his family from the lesser powers of Wickedness (trading on the eventual promise of loosening the gate if and when Lilith and Hra'gad were ever removed from play).

To seal the deal, Lilith sent a portion of herself into Obed's wife, increasing his descendant's connection with Wickedness. Aeon's planning worked: Obed never served as the Guardian, Lilith and Hra'gad had to negotiate their own gates to enter the world, and lesser entities of Wickedness were sealed away from the world.

Now that Lilith and Hra'gad are defeated, Obed must act as the 'agent' of the Guardian of Wickendess's employer to reinstate the Guardian of Wickedness, after allowing some minor entities to slip free.
